Originally from Switzerland, the call of the North first lured Laurent into its clutches
in the late 1980s when he traveled to the High Canadian Arctic. Throughout the years that followed, the North became his teacher and he became its student. The natural world of the Arctic and sub-Arctic nurtured his art, intellect and spirit, with Nature as master teacher. His identity as a photographer eventually emerged from these beginnings. From this began a cascade of important discoveries about photography and, ultimately, about himself.
Laurent has built a reputation for creating compelling multimedia productions and images of Alaska and polar regions, with a passionate eye for the land and the people who call it home. With a background in photojournalism, his experience spans location and site work, portraits and landscapes, commercial documentation and aerial photography. Laurent is used to photograph under extreme conditions, such as documenting the 1000-mile Yukon Quest International Dog Sled Race in minus 50 degree weather. As a contract photographer for the Associated Press, Laurent has provided photos for the Washington Post, the L.A. Times, CNN.com, MSNBC, and dozens of smaller newspapers.
Laurent has also worked as a mountain guide on Mount McKinley and as a wilderness guide throughout the state. Many of his stock photos are captured on these adventures. He is the author of three - and co-author of two photo books. As a public speaker, Laurent has spoken at corporate events and his multimedia productions have been seen by thousands of visitors to Alaska. Laurent lives near Denali National Park with his partner Greta and son Florian.
Laurent’s finely tuned project management skills enable him to deliver on-time and on-budget – every time. To discuss your next photo or multimedia project or to arrange a photo assignment, contact Laurent
ARTIST STATEMENT
My background is in photojournalism, but my true passion lies with visual storytelling, and I have produced several multi-image shows since 2000. I am in love with the extraordinarily powerful medium of multi-image. It is fluid and ever-changing. It provides a magic view into that little window that is the screen.
Documentary and educational in nature, my presentations are based on strong photography and narrative interviews.

The purpose of my work is to convey, through the integration of photography, video, interviews, music and natural sounds, the emotions and impressions I have gathered while in the field and project them on to a large screen. I am less concerned about entertaining an audience than creating media that inspires and stays with the viewer. I always ask myself, when the light comes on what do people feel? Photography, by its nature, tends to be representational, specific and rooted in the world we can see. I believe that by combining different media in a synergistic multimedia presentation, it is possible to communicate unique artistic expressions and impressions that photography could not do by itself.
I try to keep my work simple. Through thoughtful mixing of music, original sounds and narrative along with video and still photography, free of dazzling animations or graphics, I create an experience that provides audiences a counterpoint to the fast-paced experiences we are exposed to daily in the media world.
I truly feel that through the art I am producing, I can combine who I am with what I do. I believe that multi-image is an extraordinarily powerful medium. I love to inspire audiences with my work and create lasting impressions.
